Most Eye Drops Containing Preservatives

Several reporters visited some drugstores recently and found that there are about a hundred kinds of eye drops together including taurine eye drops, new rohto eye drops, retro neomycin sulfate eye drops, polyvinyl alcohol eye drops, houttuynia eye drops and man other different types.

“Give me a bottle of eye drops which had better have no preservatives.” At a drugstore, a staff recommended a type of eye drop called polyvinyl alcohol eye drops after inquiring the symptoms the reporter has, because among the hundreds of eye drops, only this type indicates on its label that it contains no preservatives. 

Does each type of eye drops contain preservatives? When reporters asked this question to drugstore staff, they found that most of them are not clear with this question. “Even if they are with preservatives, the quantity is very small and has no harm on eyes.” Most of the staff answered like this.

In fact, apart from the eye drops used by adult contains preservatives, eye drops used by children also do. While those people who come to the drugstore to buy eye drops only choose eye drops according to their symptoms instead of caring whether they contain preservatives or not.

Reporters notice that although most eye drops contain preservatives, there is no indication of it on the package or the instructions. Some other products only indicate benzalkonium chloride in its ingredients. People with no chemical knowledge will not know that is the preservative.

Therefore, if you decide to buy eye drops for yourself or your children, you should first check whether they contain preservatives or not. You should take priority to those indicating that preservatives are not contained such as PVA eye drops or carefully inquire doctors before you go and buy a type of eye drops all by yourself.
